Not only was Obama re-elected by a significant margin in the electoral college as well as the popular vote, Maine and Maryland approved same-sex marriage by popular vote (the seventh and eighth states to do so), and Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay U.S. senator, of Wisconsin.
