Quick thought on rewatching House M.D. 5X05 "Lucky Thirteen"
House is jealous because he thinks that Wilson is dating (and, okay, financially supporting) a prostitute. And he's jealous because Cuddy is buying baby furniture after successfully applying to be a candidate adoptive parent.
That's right. Emotionally, he's Wilson's boyfriend but Cuddy's child. And this only becomes clearer in this and subsequent seasons.

As for the emotional dependency, who's to say that breaking loose from one's parents isn't as harrowing an experience as losing one's girlfriend?
Excellent point!
My ideal scenario has always been one where Wilson, Cuddy and House become housemates; Cuddy gets help with Rachel, House gets a bit of mothering and Wilson gets to be needed by everyone.
Had to smile at the "Wilson gets to be needed by everyone," because it's so true.
