Leo Messi now holds the record for the most goals scored in one season
Again, now that it doesn't really matter anymore, Barcelona gave us a very enjoyable game, this time at home against Malaga, which had been a distant third in the Spanish League.
Defender Carles Puyol started the scoring with an assist from Andres Iniesta in the first fifteen minutes. His goal celebration involved a suggestive hand movement over his belly that immediately sparked speculations that his girlfriend might be pregnant. However, after the match, he tweeted that he had dedicated his goal to his best friend Javi, so apparently there are no Puyitos currently on the horizon :(.
The opposing team equalized with a header, but then made the mistake of fouling Iniesta in the penalty box. Messi took the shot, and unlike in that disastrous game against Chelsea, this time he sank it home beautifully. Later on, he himself was fouled in the box and scored his second goal with the ensuing penalty shot. And finally, he ended the scoring with one of his trademark explosive runs, leaping over the helpless keeper to finish his hat trick and thereby surpassing the record of 67 goals in one season that had previously been held by Gerhard Muller (1972-73).
Also, since Xavi Hernandez and Victor Valdes didn't play, and Puyol and Iniesta were both subbed out for fresher legs, Messi also wore the team captain's armband for the last part of the game. I have to say that getting it on (and off) seemed a little awkward, but he'd better get used to it - becoming a regular co-captain is a natural progression for this superstar.
In other news, Real Madrid won 3-0 against Athletic Bilbao today, which officially makes them the champions of the Spanish League. However, only one of those goals was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was clearly having an off day and shot his penalty kick right into the arms of the keeper, so Leo is currently ahead by two goals in the race for the Golden Boot :D.

Date: 2012-05-03 06:13 pm (UTC)Yeah they're clearly just playing for the fun of it now, as things should be really.
Puyi's goal was great, not even suprised he was in the box; was suprised (and a bit dissapointed) that it was kick in though, and not any hair whipping involved.
The third goal of Leo's was just perfect, he just had to make sure they won.
Aww capi Leo, they grow up so fast *sniffle*
He seemed a lot more comfortable with it than at other times, must be getting more confidence and experience which can only help.
I did watch a bit of the Bilbao game and cackled like an evil genius when C.Ron missed. Then commentators were saying that the la liga win means he'll probably get the ballon d'or next year ... yeah how about no. I wanted to throw stuff at the TV.
Don't even care about liga any more, yeah ok they can have one trophy; but that's all they ever had a shot at. And hey enjoy while it lasts (pretty sure it won't be four years).
We're in the running for zamora as well, that warms my heart. Seems curious why they're just happening to rest VV now, but totally not judging.
Also Madrid keeper has won it as many times as our reserve goalie, stay awesome.
Completely random aside; the camera panned into the crowd and showed Villa & Guaje sitting next to each other. And my brain went 'awww they're on a date, so cute'.

Date: 2012-05-03 08:49 pm (UTC)Officially we're giving Pinto practice for the Copa final since Pep promised him all Copa matches. However, VV was out for a few days of practice with "fever and general malaise," which I can't help interpreting as "down in the dumps after his last three performances."
Who is Guaje if it isn't Villa? Did you mean Xavi?
I also saw Alexis in the stands with someone from the staff, all adorable smiling babyface. I really want Barcelona to keep him!

Date: 2012-05-04 04:29 pm (UTC)Hmm that's interesting then, they do say all the right things about being a close squad/friends/blah blah but it doesn't seem to have the same 'feel' as Barca.
That makes sense too of course, well hopefully he'll be ok after a rest and the wins will cheer him up.
lol oops yeah I did mean Xavi, that'll teach me to proofread.
Oh me too, exactly. His form hasn't been great lately, but once he's back on track we're going to need him.

Date: 2012-05-04 07:16 pm (UTC)I know, it is really hard.Anyone we can cobble something together and manage, but if Leo was injured we'd be beyond screwed.
Having Villa back will really help obviously, Pedro seems to be finding his form again, and the bbs are coming through; but does always help to have more options.

Date: 2012-05-03 08:53 pm (UTC)I admire Cristiano Ronaldo as a skilled & graceful athlete, but he is so full of himself! He's famous for saying that others criticize him because they are envious that he is so handsome, rich, and talented, and also that it takes him an hour to pick out his wardrobe in the morning because it's so important to present a good image. Give me Messi with his overdue haircut and old t-shirts any day.
